Berserkers, or Werebears, are a supernatural group of shapeshifters that take the form of a bear species. The first were a special rank of warriors that wore the pelt of a bear in battle and was described to take on the characteristics of one as well. Fearless in battle, they were seen as uncontrollable and destructive, destroying everything in their path. Similar to the Werewolves, their destruction brought forth the curse of a vengeful witch, forcing them to become one with their animal skin once a month.
Beasts of Legend, the Werebears are an ancient species that primarily derive from Norway, Sweden, and some parts of the Artic. The first were a class of warriors called "The Berserkers", best known for their ill-temper, unwavering strength, and brutality in battle. In their early years they were nothing more than warriors until the discovery of magic set them apart from the others. The bear was a creature that represented strength and raw power and was inspiration for their transformation. Driven by their taste for power they became the beasts everyone thought them to be and with the use of magic became unstoppable. Through brute force and savagery, they tore through the land, leaving blood and fire in their wake.
Recognized as the Warriors of Nature, Werebears are the ultimate servants to the Triad. They are the youngest of the weres and the first group of Werebears were created by the Triad as a replacement for the Lycans and Werecats and thus became the ultimate weapon against their own kind. Unlike the other three, they weren't created with the lunar cycle which would have bound their ability to shift only under the light of the full moon. They also the only ones aware of the true place within the Triad and therefore still retain their will to shift when they please. They are only brutes and nothing more. While some have fled from the servitude of the Triad, the majority still willingly to do their bidding.
They are the only weres known to still be on good terms with the Triad because of their realization and acceptance of the fact they were only made to serve the Triad. While their sense of duty is strong, they are gradually beginning to grow tired of the Triad.
A Werebear transformation isn't just painful. It's the slowest of the transformations which makes it all the more agonizing, though most begin to enjoy the pain because it happens so often. The first transformation is the hardest, being the first time their bones shift and twist to get transform into their new form. It starts when their body temperature spikes, making them feel extremely hot. They become covered in hair and their muscles bulk up to size. A Werebear will experience their first shift at the age of puberty, but in rare cases can be caused by extreme emotion under a traumatic event.
Werebears can tap into their inner animal willingly and aren't forced to shift every month. Through high emotions such as anger and love, they were able to show certain traits such as golden eyes and fangs. However, during the cycle of a full moon it is said to be the one night a Werebear is at their peak. It is under the full moon that most wars are waged as it is believed to bring out the most vicious and feral side of a Werebear, therefore making them nearly unstoppable at this time.
Though they are not forced to shift every month it is highly recommended they do so regularly as not doing so can prove unhealthy for both them and the people around them. If forced to prevent a shift they will become extremely temperamental and will succumb to fits of rage until they are allowed to shift. Like Lycans, they can choose to appear as a bear or a man-like bear hybrid, though a simple bear form proves easier for first time shifters.
Werebears do not have the Lycans' pack mentality for the most part. Like the Werecats and Jackals, they tend to remain solitary or with a single partner. Loyalty isn't really there like it is with the others, however. They have no ties to the other werecreatures because they were created to see them as the enemy. They don't play well with others at all and are strictly solitary beasts. They have the worst temper out of the all of them and tend to be the least forgiving, having a difficult time with the idea of compromising. They are the brutes of the bunch. Like the Werecats, children tend to learn all the ins and outs of their kind and how to control their shifts and temper by their parents. Once they mastered their shifts, they are expected to venture off on their own.
A single bite can weaken a vampire but cannot turn a witch or human. Only those born with the gene can become Werebears. When a Vampire is bitten they are infected but do not die from the infection alone. It is merely served as a means to injure the Vampire to make killing them an easier task.
Because of their origins as Shapeshifters, Werebears inherited the ability to sense danger around them. A strange, unsettling feeling consumes them even though they do not know why and will instinctively take precaution until the feeling has subsided. Much like that of the Lycan's and a bear, Werebears have superior hearing, smell, and sight, even in human form. Their sense of smell being their greatest attribute. They are strong and are the strongest of the four Weres. Their main talents are their sense of duty and brutal force. Bears are just as strong as vampires if not a little stronger, but they lack grace and the reflexes to truly be devastating.
In both bear and Human form, Werebears are able to communicate and in some cases control their smaller ancestor bear. They also have the ability to communicate with other Werebears telepathically in bear form as well.
The only way to kill a Werebear is by heart extraction or decapitation. Silver or other metals only cause irritation and in most cases will just piss them off. Ingredients such as Wolfsbane is a highly effective sedative that can easily take down even the most aggressive Werebear with a single dose. Like all species, Werebears are susceptible to all forms magic.
