Aside from the very notion of being out at sea in a boat only powered by the wind, Caspian adored the stories of pirates and buried treasure. As a natural swimmer, Caspian was able to dive among the cliffs and rocks of Hallow Oaks seeking out underwater caves and searching shipwrecks for any treasure. Of course, he'd only found the occasional antique item but never a chest full of treasure but it didn't deter him from continuing his underwater excursions. He loved being in the water and he loved the smell of the sea. Some days, he positioned his boat in the middle of the empty ocean and just let his boat drift down the coast as he watched the clouds above him. It was his one escape and by not bringing anyone else into this secret world of his, it was guaranteed to last forever.
Today was no different. He steered the boat out to sea and opened the sails, letting fate guide him. He was shirtless and barefoot and wore only his swim trunks. Hoisting himself up and onto the railing of his boat, he leaned back till his back was against the flat part of the railing and he was looking up at the clouds, his hands interlocked behind his head. He watched the clouds drift lazily by before he let out a sigh and closed his eyes.
Tonight he was supposed to mingle with the rest of the family like some family reunion and they always just wanted to talk about his taking over the family or how his schooling was going or, the best ones, how he was a splitting image of his father. Sure, there were pictures of his father in the house but for some reason, the notion that he even resembled his father down to his last hair follicle pissed him off. He didn't want to be like his father. For one, his father had been the Head of House and he had also played around with the curse and made friends with a Duke ultimately getting himself, and the Duke he made friends with, killed. He just wanted to finish college, jump on his boat and leave Hallow Oaks far behind. He didn't want anything holding him back...

Despite her nature belonging to the water, Amber had always enjoyed the company of humans and the feeling of the hot pavement under her blistering feet. Summer was around the corner and with school out there was nothing but fun to be had. She spent her morning hours in countless clothes stores, trying on the newest bathing suits and accessories. After trying on 10 she lost count, but had to guess it was over 20 until she found the perfect one. A purple bikini top and black and white strip bottoms and completing it with a wrap for around her waist. By lunch time she was gathering party supplies for the towns first summer bonfire of the year, and it was Ambers job to get the alcohol.
Before she could enjoy her evening with friends and booze, she had to go for a swim. Though a Mermaid has the ability to prevent her tail from appearing while in the water, it takes a lot of energy unless she gets it out of her system. Just like before an athlete plays the game they're required to stretch and prepare their body. So with her new bikini top and her laced wrap covering her extremities she dove into the ocean and deep into its heart.
While Amber lay floating through the water with her eyes gazing up at the sunlight breaking through the waters surface, she noticed the bottom of a boat in the distance. Curiosity struck her and like a cat with a laser pointer chased after it. She circled the boat several times, inspecting the hull to gauge if it was a boat she had seen before. Judging from the size it must have been expensive, but she wouldn't be able to tell until she got a look at the passengers face.
Slowly she surfaced, her head breaking through the water just enough for her eyes to peer over it before surfacing further until it reached her chest. She caught sight of a young male, maybe early 20's, lounging on the railing. If she hadn't been curious before, she certainly was now. She had seen him before on several occasions but never approached. Only admire from a distance. When Amber was in the water she rarely engaged with humans, but with him, she almost felt drawn to him. He looked peaceful, like a sleeping baby under a spinning mobile. She almost didn't want to wake him. Still, the more she watched the more intrigued she became until finally she couldn't resist any longer.
"You might want to be careful. Too much sun can kill you." She smiled teasingly, hoping her voice was enough to wake him up and get his attention.

"JESUS CHR-" He flipped over, landing with a thud at the bottom of his boat, crashing into whatever boxes had been scattered around. He hissed in pain as his elbow collided with something before he turned his attention back to the voice. He climbed to his knees and leaned over the railing, gazing down at the head of a woman bobbing in the water. Caspian had been coming out here for the last three years and not once, had anyone been able to swim out to him. For one, the cliffs jutting out from the shore line created too much undercurrent and two, if one got tired, there was nothing out this far to stop and take a break. It was the ocean, after all. The fact that she was in the water so calmly, right beside him, was simply astounding to him and had nearly given him a heart attack. "How the Hell did you get out here?!" he asked her, gazing the surrounding water for some sort of water craft that would assure him she'd merely had an accident or she was just going for a swim. Much like he did.
Just because he had a fondness for boats, didn't mean he stayed on-board singing nautical songs. No, during the warm summer months, Caspian enjoyed diving beneath the waves and exploring the many caves beneath the cliffs and along the shore lines. Of course, he couldn't explore too far; only as far as his small oxygen supply in his snorkel would allow him. But Caspian had always been able to endure much longer than anyone else. In High School, he'd been top of swim team and had even taught swim lessons down at the rec hall. He was a natural swimmer and once, when his grandmother had still been alive, had told him he must have been a fish in a past life, an endearment that stayed with him forever. But, as long as he'd been alive, he'd never been able to find anyone who loved the sea as much as he did, let alone the water. After the initial shock to his heart wore off, he felt a quickening at the thought of being able to find someone who shared the same passion as himself.
"Do you need help? I can take you to shore..." He reached a hand down to her with a smile, offering to pull her on-board.

Amber wasn't the type of Mermaid to keep track of the boats that sailed the oceans bordering Hallow Oaks, mostly because she was the rare few who enjoyed spending time with humans on land, and she never tried to make friends with any of the sailors that passed by either, for obvious reasons. In the old days, it was considered suicide to mingle with sailors. Not only were Mermaids valued for their tails, many Mermaids were killed for simply being different or harvested for scientific and mystical research. Even today, Mermaids are taken from the waters, never to be seen again, and though this practice has since become illegal in both the supernatural and mortal community, there are still some hunters out there willing to stick their neck out for the pure fun of it.
Despite the dangers that came with mingling with humans that were aware of her origins, this one managed to catch her attention the moment she set eyes on him. As if an invisible force pulled the Mermaid to it, she found herself unable to swim in any direction but forward. It wasn't a particularly fancy boat and it certainly wasn't the most expensive she's seen, but it didn't look like a standard fishing boat or a hunters ship, so it seemed safe enough. Whether it was sheer curiosity for the human aboard that kept her there or something more, she didn't know. The simple fact he could have shot her or, in most cases, attempt to catch her like a rare fish with a net should have been enough to scare her away. But it didn't. He didn't. And his genuine concern for her only made it much harder to swim away.
"No, I'm okay. The water's nice." She wouldn't climb aboard until she was certain. She felt a sense of trust with him, but couldn't be certain until she saw his reaction when he knew exactly what she was. She needed to figure him out. Test him, even. And the more she gazed up into the crystal balls looking down at her, the more she desperately hoped he wasn't too good to be true.
As if habit her eyes scanned the boat for any signs of life besides his own. It was odd seeing someone so young on their own on such a big boat and this far out, but then again most of the teenagers in Hallow Oaks had their parents money to buy the biggest and most expensive toys. Maybe he was one of them. "Are you out here alone?" She asked both out of curiosity and concern.

He let his hand fall, clearly getting the hint she didn't want pulled aboard. Instead, he focused on controlling his still racing heart. Still, it ate at him at how exactly she was out here and she didn't seem to be struggling with staying afloat, even with the waves rocking both her and the boat up and down. Are you out here alone? The question struck him as odd mostly because if their roles had been reversed, he didn't think that would be one of the questions he'd ask. He made a point to look up and down the deck of his boat then turn back to her with a raised eyebrow. "Yes?" Did she have a problem with that? He tried to wrack his brain on the species currently residing in Hallow Oaks. Surely, one of them would have a love of water... Unfortunately, none came to mind. An image from the movie 'The Little Mermaid' popped into his head and he frowned. If mermaids existed, he would have known about it a long time ago. "Contrary to popular belief, I know how to work a boat top to bottom and I'm an excellent swimmer. There's no reason to be concerned that I'm out here all alone."

She smiled. Little did he know it wasn't because of his confidence in his maritime skills, but because she didn't have to worry about any surprises from another presence on board. "I believe you. Can't blame a girl for protecting her tail, though." She said lightly, hoping he would get the reference. Her arms continued to sway back and forth as she kept her head above the water. It was relatively easy for a Mermaid to swim, even in rough waters, but she was also trying to conceal her tail with the whites of the tides.
"I don't see guys as young as you out this far very often, not alone anyways. Just the few who come out for work or some quality time with the old man. And from the looks of it, you come out here quite often." She noted his sun-kissed skin that could almost rival hers. "My names Amber. I just moved here a few weeks ago. Thought I'd test the waters. Guess I went out further than I thought." She laughed. That was a partial lie. Amber did recently move to Hallow Oaks at the start of the summer, but it wasn't her first visit. What she wasn't letting on was she was an old time resident that at one point put the small town in her rear view mirror with the intention of never looking back. It took a lot for her to return to her hometown, but so far she hadn't regretted a single moment of it.

He snorted. "Further than you thought?" He looked off to the side where Hallow Oaks was located but only water met the horizon. It was quite a few miles to land. Could a normal human swim this far out and still be able to tread water? She had told him she'd just recently moved to Hallow Oaks. It could be possible she was a new species he wasn't aware of?
He laughed when she mentioned his age. "Yeah, I'm supposed to be in class at the university but," he shrugged. "School's not really my thing. My father wants me to take over the family "business" in time and paid for whole schooling. Doesn't mean he can make me go." he said. A heavy wind picked up and he turned away from her and pulled his sails down, being quick to tie them down as the boat turned lazily in the water, the anchor still firmly lodged on the ocean floor. With the sails down, he was forced to pull his sunglasses from the top of his head onto the bridge of his nose. He held a hand to his brow as he gazed up at the sun, judging it to be a little after noon. He supposed he could pull out the cooler for lunch...
He went back to the railing and leaned over once more. "Hungry?" he called down to her. "I made some sandwiches for lunch and I have a couple beers."

Hungry? Does a vampire drink blood? To her, that was a silly question to ask. She was always hungry, especially after swimming, but he didn't know that and she wasn't about to tell him, mostly for fear of being ridiculed as a land pig. Simply thinking about food made her stomach growl; but was it worth it? He seemed innocent enough, even if he wasn't fully aware of what she was, and she figured if he did cause any trouble she could easily jump back into the water. She gazed up at him as she weighed her options yet all it took was the sound of a growling bear beneath the water to push her towards his hand.
She extended her hand to grab his, and with his help grabbed the edge of the boat to pull herself up with the other. The process was quick. Maybe too quick for him to notice, she hoped. The moment her tail felt the cool, salty air it began to separate into two sections before changing colors; soft blue scales into sun-kissed flesh. By the time she was level with the railing she swung her legs over, being sure to keep her wrap around her lower half to conceal any personal part of her body, and lightly touched her feet to the deck. The deck was warmer than the water and for the first few seconds burned her feet. The boat rocked back and forth as the waves crashed against it but all she could worry about was the scorching deck and the blisters now forming on the pads of her feet.
"I hope you don't mind me asking, but, what do you mean when you say "family business"? What does your father do?" She hoped it wasn't too personal of a question, though it didn't stop her from asking out of curiosity.

The fact she had a tail had gone unnoticed as he leaned back to pull her on board. When she swung her legs over the side and seated herself, he pulled out a cooler and opened the top, handing her a sandwich most likely bought at the little corner store down by the docks. In his other hand, he grabbed two glass bottles of beer, also, probably, bought in the corner store. He used the side of the boat to pop the top off before he handed it to her.
"My father is Victor Lockwood, Head of House of one of the predominant witch families in Hallow Oaks. Even though I'm not the oldest son, my father has chosen me as his next in line to "rule" the Lockwood family, so to speak. He thinks I'm some kind of... prodigy or something. I don't know." he sat down beside her, unwrapping his own sandwich and taking a drink of his beer. "My dreams are far away from this place but it seems I'm not allowed to think on my own, let alone act on my own. This boat was given to me as a means to pacify me but it's only done more to intensify my dream." He took a bite of his sandwich, a far away look on his face.
Sitting in class, whether when he had been in high school or in the university, he'd seen pictures of places all over the world and beaches untouched by man. All these places had placed a calling in Caspian and, more than anything, he wanted to go to these places, to sink his bare feet into the sand of these untouched islands and meet the locals in places he'd only ever seen pictures of. He didn't need money, he didn't need a place to call home; he just needed his boat and a sense of adventure. But, every time the dream would surface, the chains holding him to Hallow Oaks would yank him back and he'd remember that he had no future, unless it was here, in Hallow Oaks. He wouldn't even be surprised if Victor had a woman in mind for him to marry.
The thoughts and ideas washed from his mind as he turned to look at her, curiosity written all over his face. "What about you? You mentioned you've moved back here? I hope I'm not being rude but... why? What the Hell is so great about this place? Long ago, I could see how this place could have been a paradise for the supernatural but now it's become a battleground for "ruling" families who only want power and control. If I could find a way to break this power streak, I might consider calling this place home but anymore, I feel like the town is trapped by rival gangs, or the mob." he chuckled at the thought and took another drink.
