Lycanthrope, or Werewolves, are a supernatural group of shapeshifters that take the form of a canine species. The first were a special rank of warriors that wore the pelt of a wolf in battle and was described to take on the characteristics of one as well. Fearless in battle, they were seen as uncontrollable and destructive, destroying everything in their path. Because of their destruction, the curse of a vengeful witch forced them to become one with their animal skin once a month, thus creating the modern Werewolf.
Recognized as the Soldiers of Nature, they were also servants to the Triad. The first group of Lycans were granted such powers by the Triad as a means of protection and constructed what, in their belief, to be the ultimate weapon against the undead. With the rise of Vampires came destruction and chaos so in order to combat this problem the Witches came together and formed the very first Lycans using prisoners of war or other shape-shifting witches in debt to the Triad. Made to believe they were doing a great service to their people, the Lycans obediently served the Triad for centuries. For the first century of their existence Lycans ran supreme and it was believed the ancient undead species would finally became extinct. This luck would change however when the alliance between the Triad and the Original Packs became strained until finally the packs left the protection of the Triad nearing the end of the 16th century. Seeing this as treachery they eradicated the wolves, and by the late 18th century only a few packs remained. Now the remaining wolves are either on a tight leash or on the run, but not for long.
The first Lycans were Shapeshifters with enhanced abilities and massive amounts of power. Due to their ability to become practically immortal through maintaining their animal form they often preferred to remain that way for extended periods of time, only reverting back to human every 100 years to mate. After their rebellion towards the Triad their ability to remain in their animal form was cut off by the Triad and now Lycans are no longer able to shift into their animal form until under the rays of the moon. However, they can still tap into small amounts of their power in the form of golden eyes and extended fangs through intense emotion such as love and anger. As time progressed the first packs were regarded as the Alpha Packs and much like the Founding witch families in Hallow Oaks became obsessed with keeping the bloodlines pure while trying to survive the wrath of the Traid.
In the year 1809, a small family of Lycans found themselves within the foggy town seeking protection from the Triad. The newborn town of Hallow Oaks was quick to welcome them in, their numbers few and their ambitions for a bigger, more diverse town high. The current wolf residences take shelter within the muggy forests near the town line, preferring to keep to themselves while remaining under the protection of the Head of Houses.
A Lycan transformation is a painful one, though most begin to enjoy the pain because it happens so often. The first transformation is the hardest, being the first time their bones shift and twist to get transform into their new form. It starts when their body temperature spikes, making them feel extremely hot. They become covered in hair and their muscles bulk up to size. A Lycan will experience their first shift at the age of puberty, but in rare cases can be caused by extreme emotion under a traumatic event.
Lycan can tap into their inner wolf willingly nor are they forced to shift every month, but can only shift into their wolf form under the rays of the moon during any cycle. However, during the cycle of a full moon it is said to be the one night a Lycan is at their peak. It is under the full moon that most wars are waged as it is believed to bring out the most vicious and feral side of a Lycan, therefore making them nearly unstoppable at this time.
Though they are not forced to shift every month it is highly recommended a wolf does shift regularly as not doing so can prove unhealthy for both the wolf and the people around them. If forced to prevent a shift a wolf will become extremely temperamental and will succumb to fits of rage until they are allowed to shift. Lycans can choose to appear as a wolf or a man-like wolf hybrid, though a simple wolf proves easier for first time shifters.
All Lycans are born with a strong pack mentality and must belong to a group in order to maintain control over their inner wolf. Loners are few simply because not many can survive on their own. Because of this, Lycans are fiercely loyal and are known to be highly tempermental. It's not easy to piss a Lycan off, though it is within their packs duty to keep each member controlled. If their territory is threatened Lycans are most likely to bite first and ask questions later, so make sure if you're hiking through the woods you don't wander into Lycan territory unprotected.
A single bite can weaken a vampire but cannot turn a witch or human. Only those born with the gene can become Lycans. When a Vampire is bitten they are infected but do not die from the infection alone. It is merely served as a means to injure the Vampire to make killing them an easier task.
Because of their origins as Shapeshifters, Lycans inherited the ability to sense danger around them. A strange, unsettling feeling consumes them even though they do not know why and will instinctively take precaution until the feeling has subsided. Much like that of a wolf, Lycans have superior hearing, smell, and sight, even in human form. Their sense of smell being their greatest attribute. They are extremely strong and can bust through most things. Though they are not as graceful and their reflexes are not as fast as a Vampires they are still better than that of a Human, making a Lycan a force to be reckoned with.
In both wolf and Human form, Werewolves are able to communicate and in some cases control their smaller ancestor wolves. They also have the ability to communicate with other Werewolves telepathically in wolf form as well.
The only way to kill a Lycan is by heart extraction or decapitation. Silver or other metals only cause irritation and in most cases will just piss the Werewolf off. Ingredients such as Wolfsbane is a highly effective sedative that can easily take down even the most aggressive Lycan with a single dose. Like all species, Lycans are susceptible to all forms magic.
