[attr="class","sern-thread-text"]In the supernatural world, convicted criminals are stripped of their physical possessions and sent to a spiritual realm befitting to its name: Purgatory. Built by an ancient being as a means to trap his enemies in a perpetual state of torment, it was taken over after his demise by the Tribunal and turned into a supernatural prison. Because the prison isn't a physical place, but a world in between life and death, prisoners are trapped as spirits, and as such allows them to cross the physical barrier to enter their spiritual hell.
This being said, anyone who enters the prison can also leave, but only the Warden and his Reapers know where the portals are hidden and how to access them. Through devious means and unfortunate events, portals are well known by the prisoners and if powerful enough some can (and have been) opened. Such a portal requires a strong magical source in order to "unlock" the door and currently only three in existence are said to be located in places that still inhabit enough power to open them: San Fransisco, New Orleans, and a small town in New York called Hallow Oaks.
The impenetrable island formerly known as "The Island of the Damned", acts as a final resting place for some of the worlds most dangerous monsters, witches, and dark fae--relying on a spiritual barrier between us and them for protection. Cold spots, black shadows, disembodied voices and scratch marks that seem to appear out of no where are believed as harmless fun to unsuspecting tourists. However the human spirits unable to pass on from violent deaths are not the cause of such stories but the phantom prisoners locked away, fighting to break free from their curse bound cells are held responsible as well. Many have tried breaking free, using the tourists as a means of escape, but it wasn't until (year) that it actually became possible.
A (species) hellbent on revenge discovered a way to return to the physical world and by doing so the San Fransisco door was weakened, allowing other prisoners to escape. Prisoners who manage to slip through however are denied access to their original bodies--many of which have been sealed away or destroyed--and are forced to take one for themselves lest they be lost in the Void forever. While the locals have remained untouched due to their discomfort toward the spooky island, many of the tourists that have visited the island have been seen as fair game and risk the chance to return to the mainland as a "whole new person".
News of the outbreak has yet to reach the mainland. With the current Warden refusing to let the Tribunal know of his mistake, many locals have started to suspect the supernatural community is to blame for the disappearance of loved ones, making alliances fickle and paranoia rising.
Missing person cases have escalated, crime is now at an all time high, and for the first time in centuries the city is on the brink of an all out supernatural war.
Hallow Oaks, or better known by it's locals as "The Safe Haven of Oaks", is a small town that appears to be just like any other. Old styled homes that signify the towns age, traditions kept by locals that define it's history, and beautiful landscape and scenery that keeps tourists coming back every year to build the ever growing economy; so whats to say Hallow Oaks isn't just like any historical town in the state of New York? Like many beautiful things in the world, not everything is always as it seems. In truth, Hallow Oaks is more than just a town, its a sanctuary for the unwanted, a home for the misunderstood, and the kind of place where the rarest and most unique of characters can find peace in a world that's constantly out to get them.
Established in 1792, Hallow Oaks began as a small village with only a handful of farmers and fisherman. Now hundreds of witches and other magical beings call it home. Among the supernatural community, the town is famously known for its incredible number of Oak Trees and the witches who harness their power for the sole purpose of protecting the town. However, the trees, even in their magnificence, are only the source for the magical barrier set around the town. The barrier itself is the milky white fog surrounding the outskirts of town, a fog so thick, you'll never see the dangers that lurk within it until it's too late.
The Fae call this "The Fe-Fiada", or the supernatural mist. Many legends have surfaced since its emergence, some saying it wasn't the witches who procured it but the Gods of Old, though the truth behind them is vastly different than peoples perceptions. Creatures of legend are said to haunt the woods along the barriers edge, protecting it from anyone who may want to cross it. Most stories are fables meant to scare young Witches from venturing too far from town, but regardless the fog and woods should never be underestimated and should be given the proper respect, and fear, it deserves.
A thick layer of condensation surrounds the town border like a barricade of milk colored clouds, shielding any who may be hidden within the forest brush, giving off an eerie feeling that you're being watched but you can't see by who. Those with mortal blood who venture through the fog see Mother Nature’s serene beauty, but nothing else. For Witches or other supernatural beings seeking refuge the town is but a mile from the border separating the mundane from the unique. Though any peculiar person can step through this magical wall, because of its seclusion any who dare step foot in the town with ill intent can rest assure any affiliation outside of the town (including the Tribunal) holds no power over whatever may happen behind the town line.
The town was originally founded by two influential witch families after the Salem Witch Trials: Duke and Lockwood, but it wasn't until the addition of two other founding families, Fay and Delacroix, did they make it into the thriving community it is today. Old Oaks serves as the towns last ties to their origins as a large portion of it remains untouched since it's founding years, but with the addition of a bustling metropolitan area called Downtown, the town has accommodated the modern lifestyles of many new residents along its coastline.
Despite the towns conversion to more modern luxuries and leniency on who enters the town, any trespassers must recognize that Hallow Oaks was meant to serve as a safe haven for any who truly needed it and the residents will do anything to see it remains that way. Though other creatures such as Fae, Mermaids, and Weres also dominate the land, any sign of a malevolent supernatural entity has long been gone and any who disrupt the peace must face the wrath of a entire town of witches. Needles to say, that doesn't mean there isn't a force hidden in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike. All magical creatures are welcome but because of the towns protective nature, any human who visits the town will have their memory wiped of any magic they may witness once they leave town.
While the rest of the world is in the dark about the supernatural community, New Orleans has openly served as a mecca for the bizarre, sinister, and the downright dangerous for over 100 years. The city is overrun by particularly mischievous supernatural and it has never been hidden from the mortal inhabitants. Though one thing has been kept hidden from them and it is decades long battle between New Orleans very own Voodoo Queen and a group of (vampires/demons) trying to take over. The demons, having made deals with witches for magic, believed that they own much of the rewards the witches have reaped and wanted to collect on it. War waged between the two species, until the Voodoo Queen had decided enough blood had been spelt. Though the tension remained the city was peaceful for awhile.
However, in recent times, the Voodoo Queen has decided to take back her territory and has found a way to kidnap (vampires/demons) for her to study. This has not gone unnoticed by the four demons, they watch and wait of evidence of her wrongdoing against the treaty. Some of the members wish to renegotiate while others are out for blood but none of them know exactly what the Voodoo Queen has planned for their ultimate demise.
This being said, anyone who enters the prison can also leave, but only the Warden and his Reapers know where the portals are hidden and how to access them.
