When the first supernatural prisoners escaped from Limbo, they hadn't known what was expected of them once free from their otherworldly prison. Without a body, their spirits could not be contained to the world of the living and slowly began to fade out of existence. Several centuries later, to prevent this from happening to him, a prisoner named (name) discovered a way to prevent this. The art of possession was thought to only be used by demonic forces but many witches through out the centuries have been able to procure such an ability, and because of (name), any escaped prisoner who escapes knows they must inhabit a vessel to survive.
A vessel can be either human or supernatural, though non-human vessels require much more effort to maintain control over. It's much easier to possess a human, and the Shade can even do so without the humans knowledge or consent. Their memories including feelings and thoughts on such moments are transferred to the Shade and can use it to their advantage.
